When Peter Kenny of New York Trenchless, Inc. was contacted to subcontract underground work in and around areas on Liberty Island, he knew that the movement and positioning of the 15-ton horizontal directional drilling machine he would be using for the job could cause irreversible damage to paving stones, concrete walkways and manicured lawns surrounding the Statue of Liberty. Kenny called Alturnamats, Inc to discuss the value of using ground cover mats versus plywood under the heavy equipment to protect the area. Recognizing that plywood has to be replaced often due to cracking and splintering, and fiberglass reinforced mats can often be expensive, Kenny turned to Alturnamats which are an environmentally friendly product that helps transport vehicles and equipment over lawns, through mud and across soft terrain. Alturnamats are made of durable polyethylene and are resistant to ultraviolet light. The waterproof ground cover mats are 1/2 inch thick to support heavy equipment and include rope handles and hook holes for easy handling around the work site. Alturnamats are available in various sizes. After considering the many benefits of using Alturrnamats, Kenny decided to use the 3 foot by 8 foot groundcover mats with cleats on both sides for positive machine traction and positive ground gripping. Besides the obvious savings on labor, bog downtime, towing charges and ground restoration fees, New York Trenchless also considered employee safety and performance to be a critical factor when using Alturnamats. Kenny stated that the design performance features of the mats helped with surface stability when the drilling mud came in contact with the surface---the "greased" effect previously experienced with plywood was not evident with Alturnamats. The mats' double-sided, diamond-plate design is both skid and slip resistant. For Al Farrugio, a horticulturist and representative for the National Park Service at Liberty Island and Ellis Island National Monuments, said the added benefits of using Alturnamats were evident. "In the past, ground damage has been incurred by contracting work and associated heavy equipment on Liberty Island, but with Alturnamats, no unnecessary ground damage occurred," said Farrugio. "I would recommend Alturnamats for future work on the island."
AlturnaMats Ground Protection Mats virtually eliminate expensive ground restoration costs due to trucks, skid-steers and stumpers driving on soft turf, sand or through mud. AlturnaMats are made of 1/2" thick 100% recycled polyethylene, can withstand 60 ton loads and are guaranteed for a full six years.
The mats are Ideal for such applications as tree care, landscaping, excavation, utilities, construction, golf courses, cemeteries and a broad range of other applications where vehicles can damage turf. Also, the mats virtually eliminate getting stuck in mud. The mats can be locked together to form a continuous roadway or a working platform. AlturnaMats feature a bold diamond plate tread for maximum traction and are available in sizes ranging up to 4' x 8'.
AlturnaMATS Ground Mats Solve Muddy Problem For Chatfield Drilling
Greenville, PA
Chatfield's Muddy Problem
I am the owner and president of Chatfield Drilling, Inc. a 40 year old environmental drilling, pumps, and remediation firm in Western PA. I began my association with the drilling industry in 1978 as a cable tool drill rig operator and pump service man working outdoors in all types of weather conditions. The type of work we perform involves the transportation of heavy rubber tired equipment in and out of muddy and difficult locations. For many years we accomplished this task with the use of US Government issue steel landing mats. These mats were extremely heavy, bulky, bent easily, and retained the muddy soils they came in contact with. To say the least it was very difficult, time consuming, and an arduous task at best. Over the years we tried plywood, which under a light truck was a better solution, at least until it got wet. Unfortunately under a heavy truck even heavy plywood buckled, split, and caked itself with mud almost immediately.
Over the years, I and my crews have spent countless hours matting trucks in and out of places we perhaps shouldn't have been. In some cases, we needed the help of a winch truck or wrecker. Anyone who has had to pay for a wrecker call on a 20 ton truck knows how hard that hits the pocketbook.
AlturnaMats To The Rescue
A few years back I noticed an ad for a product called AlturnaMats in a trade publication. Their claims were pretty bold and if true, would certainly save a lot of time and effort on the part of our crews. We bought our first group of AlturnaMats shortly after they emerged on the market and took them to one of the worst jobs we had with our heaviest tandem drill. I figured if we were going to put them to the test why fool around.
I have to tell you it wasn't long until we purchased enough AlturnaMats to outfit every drill in our fleet. The mats are extremely durable, reasonably light weight, and seemingly indestructible, made of a polyethylene material. They have a diamond plate surface which holds them firmly to the ground when weight is applied and I understand they are guaranteed for 6 years. The mats are 30% of the weight of steel mats and half the weight of plywood. The mats are tough and if enough pressure is applied can be bent but simply flipping them over will straighten them right out. Mud does not adhere to them like steel or plywood and what little material does stick to them is easily rinsed off with normal hose pressure. They have holes, which make handling easy using a hook or rope.
AlturnaMats Saves Money
These mats have saved my company considerable time and money, allowing us to be substantially more mobile in the worst conditions ever in our more than 40-year history. Our men don't complain anymore when we ask them to mat a drill into a site and in many cases use AlturnaMats even on passable ground just for stability. I personally believe these mats to be the best innovation to hit the heavy equipment industry in years. Especially if you live where the weather doesn't cooperate!
In virtually every country of the free world, you'll find AlturnaMats Ground Protection
Mats performing important tasks ranging from keeping heavy vehicles from getting
stuck in mud to protecting landscaped turf from costly vehicle damage.
AlturnaMats are built tough from 1/2" polyethylene with bold diamond plate
treads on both sides. The mats are guaranteed for a full six years and normally
last much longer. These popular mats were created originally to keep heavy drilling
rigs from getting stuck at oil, gas, and water drilling sites. They soon became
a staple, replacing plywood, which lasted only a few weeks before warping, splintering,
becoming water logged and unusable.
Creating a Temporary Roadway Today, temporary roadways made of AlturnaMats carry heavy duty trucks,
cranes, bulldozers, tractors, concrete trucks, back hoes and other construction
equipment weighing up to 60 tons safely across muddy or soft terrain without
getting stuck. They also protect lawns and paved areas from vehicle damage.
These rugged mats are finding wide use in many markets; landscaping, tree care,
cemeteries, goldf courses, well drilling, literally any area where vehicles
can get stuck or cause damage. The mats are available in sizes ranging to 4'
x 8' and are available smooth on one side or both sides, ideal for removing
dirt or gravel.
AlturnaMats have been found in a number of odd places. One such location is
in Tibet where an Ohio University research team worked with large trucks as
the team explored glacier surfaces. Another occurred at the base of the Statue
of Liberty where the mats protected valuable paved areas from steel-tracked
vehicles during a construction project. This spring, a stream running through
a Vermont golf course flooded, causing a bank to cave in. AlturnaMats were brought
in to form a road for large trucks loaded with rocks to traverse the course
with virtually no damage to the fairway.
Replacing Plywood A few years ago, plywood was used by contractors to protect vehicles
from getting stuck. With the advent of AlturnaMats polyethylene mats, plywood
is being phased out chiefly because of its brief life span and other shortcomings.
Also, over a span of two to three years, AlurnaMats save contractors considerable
costs and convenience compared to plywood. One of the welcome advantages of
these AlturnaMats over plywood is they are easily cleaned by simply hosing down
with regular garden hose pressure.
Two New Mats AlturnaMats also offers a newer mat called VersaMats that features
a flatter, slip-resistant tread design on one side. These mats are also made
of ½" polyethylene and are designed for heavy vehicles as well as
pedestrian traffic. VersaMats utilize the bold diamond plate tread on the reverse
surface, ensuring maximum ground traction, making them ideal when working at
a muddy construction staging site. They are available smooth on one side.
AlturnaMats and VersaMats are easily linked together to form continuous walkways
or large working platforms. Turn-A-Links are simply inserted into predrilled
holes and the mats are locked together. Mats are moved about easily by using
a Handi-Hook and pulling the mats into place.
Recently, AlturnaMats acquired Mobile Mat. These mats feature a bold "M"
tread design with gripping studs on the under side, anchoring the mats to the
ground. The "M" tread provides great traction even for the most aggressive
vehicles. Hand slots on each side make for easy handling. Mobile Mats are lighter
weight, yet accommodate virtually any heavy vehicle.
Six-Year Guarantee All three mats offered by AlturnaMats, Inc. carry a full six-year guarantee
from the date of purchase. Experience has proven the mats normally last much
longer than six years.
